It still begs the question though. How do we know the dead one is the real one and all the others are copies?

hmm, that’s an interesting thought, but I’m not quite sure it’s right considering what we know in terms of canon.

The Tower of Hanoi started with a program Dr. Kogami made and release into the “network sewers” (or sewers of some sort, anyways). The monster only showed up when Playmaker was in its vicinity and no explanation (on-screen or off-screen) was ever given for why it showed up. The monster only came when Playmaker took the alternate route into the sewers and then left (or, got killed) when it got destroyed by Revolver’s Mirror Force card.

It’d definitely be an interesting idea if the monster somehow was the trigger in of itself to the Tower of Hanoi, but that makes little sense considering we don’t see this monster until AFTER the tower is activated.

I also doubt Dr. Kogami made the program with the idea of a “monster guardian” in mind (or else Dr. Kogami/Revolver would have hinted/gloated at its existence during the Tower of Hanoi arc) and it doesn’t seem to have any association to Tower except that it appears to attack Playmaker as he’s looking for the source of the Tower (or, well, the source of his headaches).

Feel free to correct me if there’s something I’m not getting but I was left strongly under the impression that we are severely underwhelmed with information on what this creature is, much less how it ties in to the tower (if it does indeed tie in to the tower). I’ve seen episodes 30 and 31 a gazillion times now (*coughs* for Ema *coughs*) so unless it’s brought up past those episodes in the second half of the ToH arc (which I haven’t watched) or the last three recent episodes, I’m afraid I’m at a loss at seeing the association with the monster and the beginning of the Tower of Hanoi.

Let’s assume for just a moment that Bowman’s story is true. Bowman is the “real” Yusaku, and the Yusaku we know is the “fake” or “backup”.

Bowman, the “real” Yusaku, is angry at the “fake” Yusaku for taking over his body by accident. Seems justified. Probably is.

Let’s look at it from another perspective.

After months of physical and mental torture, an accident happens and the “real” Yusaku is swapped with the “backup”, who pretty much releases him from his torment and takes all the torture for the following months. The “fake” then went on to have a terrible childhood in which he tried and failed to go through therapy and eventually got set on a single-minded path to revenge, making zero friends along the way.

The “real” Yusaku, on the other hand, seems like he was free to roam the internet after the incident was over, with his only real worry being that he doesn’t have a physical body in the real world.

Bowman is angry at Yusaku for basically saving his sanity.

So, Bowman’s story in Episode 57 is really fishy. And that’s without us as the audience knowing the massive red flag that is the fact that Bowman’s memories have probably been rewritten tens of times in order to achieve whatever goals are assigned to him. This could easily be yet another fake set of memories. After all, this story is obviously going to throw Playmaker off focus, and if the end goal is to take over his body, then of course you’re going to take every advantage you can get.

Having someone inside “Yusaku Fujiki’s” body, but with completely different allegiances and motivations. This would be the perfect “spy”, and as we know, Yusaku has absolutely no contact with anybody right now, outside of Ai. However, if he loses and gets his body taken, they can easily just take Ai and have “Yusaku” claim that he lost and that Ai got taken. There would be nobody to disprove him.

I can see them making a backup of everything that Yusaku is. This probably would have been needed in order to assist in creating the Ignis. But there shouldn’t have been a need to create an entire backup “person”, with their own thoughts and feelings, just digital, let alone a way for the backup to be switched with the “real” person. All of the data could have been stored separately. Even more, from what we see it looks like the consciousnesses were switched almost instantaneously, too. It doesn’t seem logical for what would only need to be a pure download of Yusaku’s “everything” (I guess we can call it that) to suddenly open up an opposite connection and instantly switch the copies. (I’m not going to say that there isn’t wiggle room here, because we didn’t really know much about how the hanoi project actually worked until now, and even then it might just be a massive lie to mess with Yusaku)

Another point is that Bowman doesn’t seem to know Yusaku’s name. He doesn’t mention it a single time in the episode (from what I remember), and while it could be waved off as him thinking of himself as “Yusaku”, there’s also the possibility that they don’t actually know it. If they knew his name, they could have thrown it out at him, for example, rather than Bowman claiming “I am you, and you are me!”, he could have yelled “I am Yusaku Fujiki!”, or something similar. This probably would have thrown Yusaku off, a lot more than what Bowman had actually said in the episode. Playmaker even directly asks “Bowman, who are you?”, and Bowman’s response is “I’m a victim of the Lost Incident ten years ago.”. It seems like he’s avoiding actually stating a name. If he believes he is the real Yusaku, why does he not say that’s his name?

Next, he claims that, because he’s the “real Yusaku”, he knows everything about how Playmaker duels. This, just, no. We’re talking about a 10 year gap here. It’s very unlikely that Yusaku duels the same way as he did back during the hanoi project, especially considering that, as far as we know, the cyberse cards didn’t even exist back then. There is plenty of footage of Playmaker dueling, so it wouldn’t have been too hard to analyse his play style and figure out some logical counters to it.

Finally, we can get around to addressing the major red flag about Bowman’s memories themselves. We know that they can, and have, been rewritten. His boss, at the start of the episode, says “Wake up, Bowman. Along with your new memories. Playmaker is coming.”. Obviously, some kind of memories have been implanted into his head. And, right before the ending plays, Bowman talks about how he’s been waiting for this day to reclaim his body. The view pans to Haru. He’s smiling, and gives a short laugh. Almost as if something is going all according to plan. Given that Haru seems to be in on the whole “manipulate Bowman’s memories to our own ends” thing, it probably is. If the aim of implanting these memories into Bowman’s head was so that he would use them to cause Playmaker to lose focus, and then win the duel, then it’s worked. Playmaker has just been told that he’s not the real him, so he’s well and truly thrown for a loop right now.

Yes, Blue Girl lost. And if you didn’t see that loss coming a mile away then… I don’t know what to tell you. Right now, if a duelist has an ignis they have a 99.99% chance of winning when the ignises are always on the line. Hopefully this trend will break soon, but I just don’t see it happening unless the opponent a) isn’t after the ignises, or b) is a major antag (as a way of setting up a doomsday scenario).

Iirc, in the past I only really predicted Playmaker losing on two occasions: to ‘Go’ in episodes 4-5 (since he personally wasn’t after Ai) and in a hypothetical match against Kogami (a major antag). And I hold Soulburner up to that same standard. Blue Girl both wanted Flame and is only an antag in alignment, not in spirit; of course she was going to lose.

Put that aside? You have an episode where her dueling was great, and where her opponent treated her with admiration and respect (miles ahead of how Specter treated her). And then there was the implication in her final line that she’s going to get an ignis herself (~~and hopefully the sweet plot armor that comes with it~~). It’s clear that she’s evolved, and hopefully will continue to do so.

Part 3 of my Ryoken/Revolver analysis. My opinion has slight improved of him as a character as I mentioned before in part 2 while my liking of him as a person is…yeah, no.

Episode 9:

I committed myself to researching Ryoken and forming a researched opinion on him, so here I am. At this arc. Again.

Well, this will be fun to watch :’)

“Playmaker, you interfered with us many times.”

Revolver states his annoyance with Playmaker as a nuisance. Playmaker counteracts that by saying he wishes to only fight the Knights of Hanoi.

“I don’t care who you are. There are many in the world who hate us. And you’re just another one. We only have one goal. To retrieve the Ignis!””

Further reaffirming that Revolver thinks little of Playmaker past being an obstacle to his goals. Revolver cares for little else except doing what he thinks is right and is unafraid of treating others like pests who get in his way.
